Research

This research project aims to investigate the historico-philosophical significance of the aphoristic forms of writing that were practiced by authors of the Lebensphilosophie movement. This movement, which emerged in late 19th- and early 20th-century continental Europe, can be understood as a reaction to the crisis of the systematic projects that had characterized modern philosophy. Historico-philosophical research into Lebensphilosophie has so far exclusively considered the anti-systematic content of this movement. However, as contemporary studies into the importance of genre and style in philosophical writing show, philosophical ideas are always intimately entwined with the (historically conditioned) forms of writing in which they find their expression. The aim of this project is to investigate the specific ways in which this holds true for the aphoristic works of Lebensphilosophie authors.
