FieldTrip: The toolbox for MEG, EEG and iEEG analysis

The FieldTrip toolbox is an open-source MATLAB software package for advanced analysis of MEG (magnetoencephalography), EEG (electroencephalography), and iEEG (intracranial EEG) data. It provides a comprehensive suite of functions for processing and analyzing electrophysiological brain data. The toolbox supports the entire analysis pipeline from raw data preprocessing through advanced statistical analysis, and is designed to work with data from virtually all major MEG and EEG systems through flexible data import functions.

A key strength of FieldTrip is its combination of advanced methods for signal processing, source reconstruction, and a robust statistical framework for dealing with the multiple comparisons problem inherent in neuroimaging data. FieldTrip emphasizes flexibility and transparency in its approach to data analysis. Rather than providing a rigid black-box analysis pipeline, it offers modular functions that researchers can combine in custom workflows tailored to their specific experimental designs and research questions.

The FieldTrip project maintains extensive documentation, tutorials, and an active user community, making it accessible to both newcomers and experienced researchers. Its open-source nature and modular design have made it one of the most widely used tools in the cognitive neuroscience community for electrophysiological data analysis.
