The Ethics focus area of the National Education Lab AI (NOLAI) uses embedded ethics and empirical ethics to research and advise on the use of AI in education. NOLAI aims to improve primary and secondary education in The Netherlands using AI technologies developed specifically for the education sector. Our ethics team works closely together with AI developers, teachers and scientists from different disciplines, to reflect on responsible use of AI. Close collaboration also helps to put findings into practice immediately. Thus, at NOLAI, we ensure that ethics is embedded in the development of AI. At the same time, we explore how AI's input into educational practice affects ethical values in education. Among other things, we use the sphere transgressions framework to empirically investigate the ethical values and moral practices of education, and how these values and practices change when AI is used.
