HOME-IBD

Duration
2023 until 2027
Project type
Research
Organisation

Aim: This project aims to detect and predict flare-ups and help patients monitor IBD at home using smart technologies.

Background: People with IBD suffer from chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Common IBD symptoms include persistent diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloody stools and weight loss. In addition, patients may suffer from flare-ups ⎯ temporary increase in IBD symptoms. IBD flare-ups are currently impossible to predict and prevent. They occur even during medication use and it is unclear what triggers them in many patients.

Relevance: Continuous remote monitoring can provide physicians with objective data on the physiological changes and inflammatory state in IBD, which are currently lacking. Better understanding and prediction of flare-ups can improve patients' quality of life and reduce healthcare costs. The project offers a unique new way to monitor IBD.
