Presenting to a group is a challenge for many people, and this certainly applies to pupils as well. Learning to present does not happen automatically. Can educational AI support learning and teaching in this area?

Challenge for education
Teachers often lack the time and space to let every pupil practise repeatedly in a safe setting and to provide them with feedback. Yet improving a skill is precisely about an ongoing process!
What teachers want
Teachers at College de Heemlanden in Houten and the Anna van Rijn College in Nieuwegein see their pupils struggling with presenting in front of a group. This discomfort is partly caused by anxiety about standing in front of the class, but also by a lack of knowledge and understanding of how to present. As a result, they lack the confidence to deliver their presentation in a relaxed and convincing way.
Smarter together through co-creation
Through NOLAI, the schools have been connected with researchers and developers from Utrecht University. Students, teachers and researchers from Utrecht University of Applied Sciences are also taking part in developing a prototype of educational AI. A unique project!
Development goal
A prototype of educational AI that generates personalised feedback on pupils’ posture, gestures and speech. This will allow them to train more safely, more often and in a more targeted way, helping them build confidence and reduce performance anxiety. For teachers, this may help reduce workload.
Research questions
How effective is an AI tool for developing presentation skills and reducing presentation anxiety in pupils through automated feedback? What is required for this, and which human values are important?
Current status
This project runs from 2025 to 2028 and has started with the preparation and concept phase. Each co-creation project progresses through a concept, a working prototype and validation of the prototype. The results are shared online as quickly and openly as possible, so that education, science and EdTech companies can benefit from them.
