Data will be collected via sensors on the learning materials for the arithmetic course. An AI application provides insight into the students’ use of the application and their end results. It furthermore points out crucial moments in the students’ learning process to the teacher.

Key question
What are the key moments in learning arithmetic with montessori materials, and how does AI provide the teacher with insights into the diverse steps of the learning process?
Teachers notice that they miss key moments in the process during classes where students work independently with the learning materials. Students furthermore wait for teachers to check their work before they can continue with other work. An AI application collects data regarding the students’ use of the material while they are working via sensors. This data will be used to diagnose the approach, strategy, and end result so that it can point teachers towards crucial moments in the learning process.
NOLAI is the national education lab AI for primary, secondary, and special education in the Netherlands, funded by the National Growth Fund. €80 million has been awarded for the period of 2022 to 2032 in order to develop prototypes and gather knowledge about AI in education together with schools, corporations, and scientists over the span of ten years. Each academic year, around ten new projects are launched all across the Netherlands. A project takes three years on average.
