In the PAAL project (Phonological Cognisance and Allied Linguistic Representations) we study the largely overlooked area of 'phonological cognisance'. This is the deep, intuitive knowledge speakers share about possible word forms in their language. By studying how this operates for children and adults in first and second language acquisition, historical language change, writing systems, and the functioning of language in the brain, PAAL sheds light on the central role of phonology in these areas.
The project bridges linguistics, psychology and neuroscience focusing on Germanic languages and Bengali.
