In June 2025, the European Commission proposed extending temporary protection for displaced persons from Ukraine until 2027. These displaced persons will then reside in the Netherlands for five years with a temporary protection status. The future course of action after this period is being determined by policymakers. Dutch policy focuses primarily on a coordinated European approach, promoting voluntary return and developing a national alternative for residence after the termination of the EU temporary protection scheme. Research into the wishes and motivations of the displaced persons themselves is essential for further policymaking.
The Centre for Migration Law, together with the Opora Foundation, and commissioned by the Research and Data Centre (WODC), is conducting the study "Beyond Temporary Protection: Future Prospects of Ukrainian Displaced Persons in the Netherlands." The study aims to provide insight into the considerations of displaced persons from Ukraine residing in the Netherlands in their decision to return to Ukraine and the wishes and needs that arise from this residence perspective. The emphasis of the research will be on the role that work plays in this.
