Survey Language Attitudes in the Low Countries

The project concerns a survey about the languages spoken and taught in the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders and Wallonia) and the attitude of language users towards the different languages, and organized a study afternoon about this. The survey is intended for students in higher and university education in the Netherlands and Belgium of all disciplines. Teachers can also complete the survey.

The survey contains a range of questions about languages at home, school languages and languages used in their studies. Through the answers we want to gain insight into the position of the different languages in the Dutch and Belgian multilingual society, and the value that students attach to language skills, both in their private situation and within their study and (future) work situation. In this way we hope, among other things, to better understand why language studies are not very popular, while the social need for language skills is great. We also hope that the answers can contribute to the discussion about the official language or languages to be used in higher education. We expect that the answers will reveal interesting differences between the various fields, between the two countries and between the different language areas.
