Citizenship is a concept in flux, and civic education a recurring point of political and social discussion. Teachers are often central to these discussions because they are called upon to form 'citizens'. What task is assigned to teachers? And in what – perhaps idiosyncratic and diverse – ways do teachers give substance to civic education? This research exposes the (changing) views on and of the teacher as a 'former of citizens' in the Netherlands since 1945. To this end, discussions in the media, testimonies of teachers and students, reports of meetings and conferences of teacher organisations and self-made teaching materials are being analysed.
