The PhD project investigates the conceptualisation of gravity in visual arts, before and after Isaac Newton’s treatise of 1687. The study focuses on seventeenth-century Dutch culture and uses a phenomenological approach to analyse textual and visual materials. The interdisciplinary project aims to recalibrate the role of gravity in two-dimensional compositions and to explore what it means to experience gravity through art.
