As repeatedly reported in news about excessive use of force by the police but also aggression by and against officers, mastering control over one’s physiological arousal is far from trivial. As suggested by extensive surveys conducted in the Dutch Police, as well as preliminary evidence, the Heart-Rate-Variability (HRV) biofeedback trainings currently implemented in the curricula of police officers might not suffice to address the important issue of self-regulation. Building-up on our previous work, my thesis aims to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of training HRV through biofeedback in an active and arousing VR context.
