Big Chemistry

Big Chemistry is a consortium of five Dutch knowledge institutes, which use AI and self-driving labs (SDLs) to accelerate the development of formulations in industry. Its objective is to develop predictive models based on excellent science for industrial use, and to facilitate the development of new, sustainable formulations in an efficient way.

Transform the art of formulation into a data-driven science

Conventional discovery of new formulations in chemistry is complex and slow. Big Chemistry will boost discovery and innovation in chemistry through the development of AI-guided, self-driving labs (SDLs) and unique databases with properties of complex molecules for AI-driven retrieval and training.

Big Chemistry has four overarching goals.

Scientific disruption

With a world-leading staff, including a Nobel laureate, Big Chemistry offers world-class expertise in chemistry in combination with AI-driven, autonomous self-driving labs and a database with unique properties of complex (mixtures of) molecules.

Responsible innovation

Big Chemistry will exploit our expertise and facilities to transform the formulation of complex mixtures from an art into a science-based technology.

Working with partners from industry, Big Chemistry will make their expertise, materials and technologies available, also for the benefit of society.

Talent development

Big Chemistry trains today’s talent with skills in AI and engineering to educate a new generation of experts to advance the emerging field of accelerated chemical formulation.

Ecosystem building

Big Chemistry connects new companies and existing key players in the innovation space to accelerate the design and commercialisation of SDLs and AI algorithms.

Partners

Big Chemistry has been made possible by the National Growth Fund and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW). The consortium partners are: Radboud University (lead partner), Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Groningen, AMOLF, Fontys.

Radboud chemists are working with companies and robots on the transition from oil-based to bio-based materials

Chemical products are still often based on fossil raw materials. Radboud scientists are contributing to the ‘materials transition’ towards products made from biobased raw materials. Robots and AI are assisting in this process.
