The Radboud Institute for Biological and Environmental Sciences (RIBES) is involved in the biology education at the Faculty of Science of Radboud University. All staff scientists of RIBES have a dual task: besides their research, they have a role as teachers.

The main research subjects are present in the whole curriculum of the Bachelor's Biology. This way, students can experience and learn about all current research projects that take place at the institute. Over the three years of the Bachelor's programme, students can gradually specialise into one of the RIBES research topics.

Do you want to know how climate change affects biodiversity? Or how to improve the diagnosis and treatment of diseases? Are you fascinated by evolution, the human brain, genetics, and ecology? Then Biology is what you are looking for.

Application deadline: 15 January.

The Master's specialisations in Biology cover all research topics of RIBES. The specialisations are Adaptive OrganismsConservation and Restoration EcologyMicrobiology, and Environment & Sustainability

Adaptive Organisms

In this challenging, research-oriented specialisation, you will become an expert in the fundamental processes involved in stress adaptation of individual organisms, for example plants, micro-organisms and animals.

Conservation and Restoration Ecology

Focus on the relationships between different communities within an ecosystem. Find out how they respond to environmental stress and unravel ecosystem dynamics. Use these insights to contribute to nature conservation and restoration.

Focus on the functioning of microorganisms and their potential to improve our health and the environment. This includes applications such as energy-efficient waste management or new vaccines. You will gain extensive experience in microbial research.

Environment & Sustainability

Do you want to contribute to solving the environmental sustainability challenges of our time? In this specialisation, you focus on unraveling human impacts on nature and using this knowledge to identify environmental sustainability solutions.

RIBES employs more than 60 PhD candidates. It is important that each PhD candidate receives ample training, not only in research-specific skills, but also in transitional skills. It is our ambition that each PhD candidate obtains their PhD within 48 months after starting their trajectory. RIBES is committed to provide excellent supervision and support to each candidate from the supervisors and from the RIBES Graduate School.
