Bibliography of Catholic Dutch Periodicals - BKNP

Spanning five volumes, the work contains 3,339 entries covering 60 per cent of all Catholic periodicals published in the Netherlands. The term ‘periodicals’ encompasses all publications issued at regular intervals, meaning not only daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly magazines, but also annually published almanacs, directories, yearbooks, lists of names and study guides, as well as report books and annual reports of organisations of national or regional significance. In addition to bibliographic details (title, length, format, place of publication), these title descriptions contain a wealth of contextual background information relevant to the user: the history of the periodical, the publishing body or the editorial team. As a result, the long-running periodicals in particular reflect broader developments within the Dutch Catholic community across a cross-section of society.

Reul Publisher: Valkhof Pers, Nijmegen 1999 Download	The first volume of the BKNP contains 314 entries for daily and weekly newspapers published up to 1980. For regional and local newspapers, the criterion is that only those publications are included which, during a period of their existence, appeared at least twice a week. As regards weekly newspapers, they must be of a general, opinion-based nature or have been distributed as a supplement to a daily or regional newspaper. This volume also includes trade journals for daily newspaper publishers and journalists, as well as the publications of the Catholic Dutch Press Agency.
2. Culture and leisure Editors: Otto S. Lankhorst en Door Timmermann Publisher: Valkhof Pers, Nijmegen 2008 Download	The second volume of the BKNP focuses on Dutch Catholic culture and leisure in the 19th and 20th centuries in all its facets, featuring 368 bibliographical profiles. Included are both leading cultural, literary and academic journals such as De Beiaard, De Gemeenschap, Roeping and Tijdschrift voor theologie, as well as a large number of journals and almanacs that have fallen into obscurity. It also covers the colourful variety of periodicals that collectively catered for leisure activities within the Catholic community: from chess to football, from dancing to singing, from travel to theatre, from Esperantists to birdwatchers.

Religious and church life Editors: Vefie Poels en Zjuul van den Elsen Publisher: Valkhof Pers, Nijmegen 2012 Download	Religious and church life in Catholic Netherlands during the 19th and 20th centuries is covered in all its facets in the third volume of the BKNP, which contains bibliographical descriptions of nearly 1,200 periodicals. The main themes are Church information, Orders and congregations, Lay religious movements, Theology (including liturgy, ecumenism, apologetics and the preservation of the faith), Apostolate, Devotion and Mission. The collection provides insight into how the distinct identity of Dutch Catholics has developed across a broad spectrum, ranging from being ‘more Catholic than the Pope’ to provocative individualism. Included are well-known periodicals such as the Katholiek Archief, Pius-almanak, Het Schild, Kerk en ontmoeting, Rome and Plein. But there is also a strikingly large number of journals published by religious orders and congregations, mission journals and magazines that grew to become important mouthpieces of the Dutch Catholic Church, such as De Volksmissionaris, De Bazuin and De Kloosterling.

Upbringing and education Editors: Vefie Poels en Zjuul van den Elsen Publisher: Valkhof Pers, Nijmegen 2018 Download	The fourth volume comprises 898 titles, all of which relate to education and upbringing: some are intended for children and young people, whilst others are devoted to them. The large number of periodicals in this category reflects the way in which young people in Catholic Netherlands were organised: both by social class and by gender, and within these categories often by age group as well. These periodicals originated from the numerous primary and secondary schools, higher education institutions, student societies, seminaries, boarding schools, workers’ youth organisations and various trade union organisations, each of which published its own magazine. Naturally, this section of the BKNP also includes popular magazines such as De Engelbewaarder, Taptoe and Okki (the childern's magazine of Katholieke Illustratie) for young people, specialist journals such as Het Katholieke Schoolblad and School en Godsdienst, and the journal Dux, which exerted an enormous influence on Catholic thinking about mental health in the 1950s and 1960s.
