Send encrypted files with Filesender

It is easy to use. You send and receive files via your web browser, without any additional software or plug-ins. Log in with your institutional account via SURFconext; your recipient does not need an account. You can send large files with SURFfilesender (up to 1 TB). This includes files containing research data, but you can also send smaller files easily and securely with SURFfilesender.

SURFfilesender uses end-to-end encryption. This makes it impossible to view the files from outside. You send a password to open the files. This allows you to determine who has access to confidential/privacy-sensitive information. In addition, all servers are located in the Netherlands and are subject to European privacy legislation. The uploaded files are stored in the Netherlands for a maximum of 21 days.

Go to: https://filesender.surf.nl and log in with your Radboud University account. Here you can add the files or an entire folder that you want to send.

Encrypted sending

Files up to 2 GB can be sent with encryption. If you want to send your files encrypted, tick the box for “File Encryption”. You then send a “key” to the recipient via a second channel (e.g. by telephone or text message). The recipient then enters this key to download the file. This allows you to determine who has access to your valuable research data or other privacy-sensitive files.

Managing your transfers

By default, files are available for up to 14 days after sending. You can manually adjust this to a maximum of 30 days, or less, under “Expiration date”.

Under the “My Transfers” tab, you can manage all sent files and folders. For example, you can delete transfers if you discover that something has been sent to the wrong email address by mistake.

Receiving files securely from third parties

If a third party/external party needs to send you confidential information, you can also invite them to do so via SURFfilesender. To do this, select the “Guest users” tab within the SURFfilesender environment. With this invitation, the guest user can now securely upload files within the SURF environment, where you can retrieve them securely.
