Climate Change Conference in Baku - Triumph or Failure?

Wednesday 27 November 2024, 12:30 pm - 1:15 pm
Current Affairs Lecture in English | Radboud Reflects and VOX

Venue:Lecture Hall Complex, Radboud University | This programme is in English

After two weeks of heated negotiations and an extended climate summit in Baku, a climate agreement has finally been reached: Prosperous countries have pledged to provide $300 billion annually for climate aid to developing countries. But is this enough to avert a climate disaster? Who actually benefits from this agreement? Can science still provide sufficient political direction amidst huge economic and political interests?
Climate scientist Heleen de Coninck was present in Baku. She discusses together with philosopher Marc Davison the (im)possibilities of international cooperation. Come and learn in your lunch break about whether a climate summit like this is still valuable, or is it time to look for new solutions?

Hopeful agreement or political spectacle?

The recent climate summit was mostly characterized by ongoing tensions between countries. While many Western countries are full of praise for increasing climate funding to $300 billion a year, developing countries mostly see it as a political compromise that does not solve real problems. The sentiment that prosperous countries put their own interests above those of vulnerable countries reinforces the divide between both worlds. Is climate losing out to economic interests? And what does this mean for the future of international climate negotiations?

Does this climate summit really mean a step forward or are we dealing with a political spectacle that contributes little to real climate action?

Bring your sandwiches, ask your questions and learn more about the future of international climate action.
