Prepared for the Next Crisis?

Monday 30 November 2026, 8 pm - 9:30 pm
Lecture and conversation | Radboud Reflects and Adapt!

Venue: LUX, Nijmegen
Language of the programme: Killian McCarthy's lecture is in English. The conversation is in Dutch.

No electricity. Your phone loses signal. The tap sputters and then stops running. If a crisis were to break out tomorrow, what would you do? Where would you go, and whom would you trust? According to the government, citizens should be prepared for emergency situations. But how do you prepare yourself, both physically and mentally, for the unknown? Join social psychologist Amarins Jansma and economist Killian McCarthy as they discuss how citizens and leaders can prepare for the next crisis.

More Than Water, Canned Beans, and an Emergency Radio

Citizens are being advised by the government to assemble an emergency kit so that they can cope independently during the first 72 hours of a crisis. But preparedness involves more than a few bottles of water, some canned food, and an emergency radio. How can you build resilience for an emergency situation that is both difficult to predict and hard to imagine? How can you remain calm under pressure and make sound decisions? Where do you turn for support? Can we rely on one another when it really matters? And how much trust do we place in the government during such times?

Leading in Times of Crisis

How do you guide a society through a crisis? The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that leaders can respond to crises in very different ways. Some decisions foster trust and stability, while others create division and uncertainty. What does a crisis demand of our political leaders? How should they make decisions when circumstances are changing rapidly and pressure is mounting? And how can they maintain public trust when no one knows exactly how long a crisis will last?

Following their lectures, Amarins Jansma and Killian McCarthy will discuss the responsibilities of both citizens and public leaders when a crisis unfolds.

The event will be conducted primarily in Dutch, although Killian McCarthy's lecture will be delivered in English. The discussion afterwards will be in Dutch.

About the speakers

Amarins Jansma is a social psychologist and postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Governance and Organization Studies at Utrecht University. She is also a researcher within Adapt!, a broad research project that investigates how individuals, groups, and institutions respond to crisis situations. Jansma studies the interaction between citizens and institutions during times of crisis. Her research maps where people in their local communities turn to for support, and how they provide and receive assistance during a crisis.

Killian McCarthy is an Associate Professor of Strategy at Radboud University. He has studied crisis leadership and, as part of this research, interviewed senior executives and top leaders. McCarthy is also a professor at the Kyiv School of Economics in Ukraine, where he researches how Ukrainians can rebuild their country in the aftermath of war and crisis.
