Women’s Emancipation: Are We Back to Square One?

Thursday 17 September 2026, 8 pm - 9:30 pm
Lecture and conversation | Radboud Reflects and Gender, DEI and Social Safety

This programme is Dutch spoken.

‘Take Back the Night’, ‘My Body, My Choice’, and ‘the Dolle Mina movement’. Women are once again taking a stand against inequality, inappropriate behavior, and femicide. Because in society, online, and in politics, traditional and conservative ideas about gender relations are becoming increasingly normalized again.

As early as 1949, the French philosopher and writer Simone de Beauvoir wrote extensively about the position of women in her classic The Second Sex. Philosopher and writer Alicja Gescinska has written a retelling in which she lets De Beauvoir deliver a passionate—and at times hilarious—tirade against the recent revival of conservative ideas and in favor of the liberation of women… and men as well.

Come and listen to philosophers Alicja Gescinska and Katrine Smiet and discover what Simone de Beauvoir would think of the position of women in 2026.
