Course | Kitaro Nishida – Between Zen Buddhism and Western Philosophy

THIS COURSE IS IN DUTCH | Who was Kitaro Nishida, the most important Japanese philosopher of the twentieth century?
Kitaro Nishida (1870–1945) is the founder of the Japanese Kyoto School, which combines Zen Buddhism and Western philosophy. He inspired many students with his philosophical originality and creativity, and he himself also drew inspiration from Western philosophy. Join this five-part course, where you will become acquainted with Japanese philosophy, Zen Buddhism, and the thought of Kitaro Nishida.

The lecturers are: philosopher Margreet de Zeeuw, Herman Westerink, Manja Kisner, Robin Riemersma, and scholar of religion Paul van der Velde.

    General

    East meets West

In the thought of the Japanese philosopher Kitaro Nishida, insights from Western and Asian traditions come together. This fusion leads Nishida to a distinctive and original view of the nature of reality and the role of consciousness.

Become acquainted with Japanese philosophy and Zen Buddhism and learn how Western thinkers such as Hegel, William James, and Kant influenced Nishida’s thinking. Each week, one specific thinker takes center stage, and we examine how Nishida integrates that thinker’s ideas into his own philosophy.

An introduction to modern Japanese and intercultural philosophy provides the context from which we then explore Nishida’s body of thought in greater depth.
