COURSE WAS IN DUTCH - Culture is the key success factor of our evolution. This insight offers a completely new image of what it means to be human. Natural selection is not the same as the survival of the fittest; humans are evolutionarily successful because we are exceptionally good at cooperating, transmitting knowledge, showing herd behaviour, using language, and creating art.
In five lectures, philosopher Marc Slors guided participants through the most important contemporary theories on the evolution of culture and cultural evolution. They have learned why humans are not homo economicus, why we are sensitive to prestige, why herd behaviour can sometimes be smart, and how language emerged. And they have discover what our distant past can teach us about the major challenges of our time.
