Erasmus, Spinoza, Maria Montessori or Elinor Ostrom. What does the university want to achieve by naming a building, room or path on campus? How was the name determined in the past and how should we do it in the future? The Radboud Campus Naming Committee is facing this last question. Come and listen to heritage expert and chairman of the committee Johan Oosterman about how the naming came about so far, what is under discussion and what the committee's remit is. Scholar of culture Liedeke Plate discusses the importance of representation and diversity in naming buildings and paths on campus.Think along and provide input for their report, which the committee will use to advise the Executive Board.

Persons

Should we insist on naming persons: important scientists, former rectors and, more recently, former students? At the risk that these persons could later be seen as controversial, like what happened with the Linnaeus Building and the Beel Room, for example. The Beelkamer, for instance, is now called De Salon. Or is it right to name after persons, and what are the alternatives? Should we change the naming scheme?

Think along

Why is it important to talk about naming buildings? How can we ensure that names do not exclude or fail to represent people? And what does the university actually want to convey with the naming of buildings and places on campus?

Heritage expert Johan Oosterman is the chairman of the Radboud Campus Naming Committee. He explains their mission, their working methods and the questions and dilemmas they face. He will also talk about how the naming of buildings and locations on campus has come about so far. There will be room for you as a participant to join the discussion and give your input to the committee.

About the speakers

Johan Oosterman is a linguist and director of Radboud Heritage. He is the chairman of the Radboud Campus Mission Naming Committee.

Further discussions
