How do we in the West view the Middle East, and why do we view it like that? What role does the prevailing image of this region play in policy choices that are made, and in politics in the region itself? How does framing actually work? Come hear from political scientist Nora Stel and join us in thinking about framing of and in the Middle East.

Big impact

Framing plays an important role in the way the Middle East is understood and influenced globally. Whether consciously or unconsciously, it has a major impact on both policy choices and public opinion. The words we use to designate areas, tensions or groups of people often contain a certain coloring. Additionally, players inside and outside the region use framing strategically to promote their own interests. Diversity and complexity quickly come under a pressure in this process.

Come in your lunch break and learn more about the background of the turmoil in the Middle East in this third of four Background Current Affairs Lectures on the Middle East.
