How Democracies Collapse | Lecture and Conversation with Political Scientist Carolien van Ham and Classicist André Lardinois

This programme was in Dutch, please visit the Dutch page for the complete recap and review.

Thursday 8 May 2025 | 20.00 - 21.30  hrs| Lecture Hall Complex, Radboud University | Radboud Reflects and Anchoring Innovation

Democracies inevitably collapse and eventually will lead to tyranny, Greek philosophers such as Plato and Polybius warned in their time. And in Roman times, Emperor Augustus weakened the democratic aspects of the Roman republic with popular support, only to maintain his power for decades. Is democracy inherently fragile? And do we see signs of such a shift again today, for example in the United States? Come hear political scientist Carolien van Ham and classicist André Lardinois discuss further how we should look at democracy today.
