This talk will be held in Dutch.

The pill is under pressure.  More and more women seem to be “pill tired. The tablet is said to be harmful or unnatural. Young people and influencers are sharing negative experiences on social media and recommend alternative, non-hormonal contraceptives, such as “natural” contraception.

Where does this opposition to the pill come from? Is it a new form of feminism? And what can history teach us about it? Come hear gender historian Marloes Hülsken discuss resistance to the pill.

Liberating or oppressive?

The birth control pill has been on the Dutch market since the 1960s. This revolutionary drug successfully separated sexuality and reproduction.

The right to safe and accessible contraception was one of the important action points of the second feminist wave in the 1960s and 1970s. The pill freed women from the fear of unwanted pregnancy and thus made a major contribution to women's emancipation is a common view.

But where the pill once liberated straight women, more and more women today seem to question its use. Is this resistance a new development, or are we actually seeing more protests against the pill in history?
