What do we consider natural and what do we consider unnatural? Our thinking about the boundary between nature and humans, nature and the city, or nature and farmland has changed over time. Learn from short talks by scientists from Radboud University about (un)natural.
Latin School
During Nijmegen History Week, explore Nijmegen's rich history at the Latijnse School! Discover the Latijnse School in the heart of Nijmegen, listen to interesting lectures about how we view our history, or visit the Brein Museum. On 17, 18 and 19 October, during History Week, you can visit the Latijnse School from 12:00 to 17:00.
The Latijnse School has a rich history and has been part of Nijmegen's streetscape for almost half a millennium. For a long time, it was a building full of education, but in recent years that role had disappeared. In order to make knowledge accessible to the people of Nijmegen again, the municipality donated the Latijnse School to Radboud University in 2023 on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.
Since 1544, the Latijnse School – designed by Nijmegen city mason Herman van Herengrave, who also designed Nijmegen City Hall ten years later – has fulfilled several roles. The building was nicknamed the Apostolic School for a long time before it was converted into the Stedelijk Gymnasium van Nijmegen in 1842. The building is located on Sint-Stevenskerkhof, a small square at the foot of the church, and is accessible via Geert van Woutrappen. The building houses several initiatives, ranging from lectures and career guidance to an Urban Leisure Lab and an exhibition on heritage. The Brein Museum of the Donders Institute can also be found here.
During Nijmegen's History Week, there will be various activities in the Latijnse School. The full programme will be shared shortly.
