A command to ChatGPT consumes 15 times more power than a Google search. The command to Siri that turns off your lamp takes as much power as leaving that same lamp on for an hour. We are increasingly aware of the impact of air travel and meat consumption, but our data usage seems to be a blind spot. AI in particular is quite an energy guzzler.
Bernard van Gastel deals with the sustainability of our digitisation drive: what can we do to reduce power consumption, and how much do we control? Learn from Bernard's sustainable solution and discover your own digital footprint.
About the speaker
Bernard van Gastel is associate professor of Sustainable Digitisation at the Computer Science Institute at Radboud University. Besides his research on analysis methods to provide insight into software energy consumption to software developers, he also researches sustainable software in a broad sense: including the effects of software on society. This includes social impacts, inclusion, equal opportunities, privacy. Here, he often collaborates with scientists from other disciplines.
