Campus & Facilities

Campus & Facilities manages and maintains Radboud University's physical assets. These physical assets include not only objects such as buildings, but also the greenery, sports fields, audiovisual facilities in the classrooms, public lighting, parking facilities and the furnishing and equipment in all catering establishments.

All of these assets combine to create an attractive campus. They contribute to a pleasant working, living, research and teaching environment and thus to the university as an attractive research and education institute and employer. Radboud University's assets are therefore of value to the campus. Asset management is more than maintenance management alone; it takes a broader view of physical assets. It extracts the desired value from assets by aligning the planning and execution of activities with the university's strategic objectives. It is not just the individual asset, but the entire system of assets that creates value.

Scope and approach

Asset management focuses on maintaining physical assets so that they continue to function optimally within the specified (performance) requirements. Conservation refers to maintaining and improving the campus through regular maintenance (daily and large-scale maintenance), replacement and improvements (functional adaptations, renovation/redevelopment).

A versatile method that:

  • translates managerial decisions into asset objectives
  • monitors values such as safety, affordability and usability
  • makes and manages clear trade-offs between performance, costs and risks
  • proposes integrated measures with a long-term perspective
  • standardises and is transparent
  • ensures knowledge retention and facilitates knowledge exchange
  • offers room for improvement, adaptation and innovation

Asset portfolio

Asset management concerns the asset portfolio of Campus & Facilities, as well as its systems, processes and information. The asset portfolio consists of all physical objects that contribute to achieving the primary tasks of Campus & Facilities. The portfolio is divided into three asset groups.

Grounds

The ‘grounds’ asset group covers the (public) grounds and green spaces, including sports fields, underground infrastructure, outdoor furniture, parking facilities, etc. This also includes all paved and unpaved roads, footpaths, cycle paths and walkways on campus. In addition to lighting, signage and other elements that improve safety and navigation on campus, water drainage and management infrastructure is an important part of this asset group.

Inventory

The inventory consists of a wide range of items needed for daily activities and operations on campus. These include office furniture, classroom furnishings, catering and sports equipment such as balls and fitness equipment, and installations and facilities such as kitchen installations in the restaurants and audiovisual equipment in the classrooms. Vehicles such as company cars and service bicycles used for transportation and maintenance on campus are also part of the inventory.

Value aspects

The value aspects below are derived from the university's goals and ambitions. They are divided into the three main themes of asset management.

Strategic asset management plan

The Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP) connects Radboud University's goals and ambitions with the maintenance of its physical assets and defines the value aspects derived from it. The SAMP describes what the university would like to achieve with the physical assets and based on that, what needs to be done to maintain the assets and achieve these goals.

The SAMP is therefore an important and guiding document for the implementation and execution of asset management.
