Guideline on individual collaborations

Individual employees may, based on academic freedom, make their own decisions about collaborating with another individual scientist. The following is important for such collaboration:

  1. This concerns collaboration in which all agreements (substantive and other) are made exclusively by the individual scientist themselves;
  2. No agreement has been concluded or decision taken by any managerial organisational unit (faculty, research or educational institute, department, etc.);
  3. The non-Radboud partner does not use Radboud University's financial resources, either to finance research resources or for any other purpose (e.g. travel expenses);
  4. The Radboud employee uses Radboud University's financial resources solely for their own research or teaching activities (travel to the partner institution is also not financed by Radboud University).

Individual employees are free to enter into collaborations at any time. This freedom comes with responsibility. If the Executive Board of Radboud University or the Board of Directors of Radboudumc has decided to restrict collaboration with a partner institution, it is understandable that individual employees will also consider whether they wish to continue or enter into individual collaborations. Employees are then advised to:

  • Take note of the content and considerations of the decision;
  • Assess the purpose of the collaboration and/or the collaboration partner in light of these considerations and evaluate whether they are at odds with each other;
  • Make their own assessment. It is wise to consult with immediate colleagues.

In addition, there is also the option of requesting a moral consultation or intervision discussion for a specific case via Radboud Reflects.
