What is the impact and what is expected of you?
Upgrading your Radboud managed workstation to Windows 11 can be done by yourself, as long as you are connected to the network of the university (eduroam, eduVPN or a physical connection). If you connect with eduVPN, you can also perform the upgrade from home or another remote location. As soon as your device is ready to upgrade, you will receive a notification at the bottom right of the screen. From then on, you can perform the upgrade at a time that suits you. You can postpone the upgrade until the specified deadline, after which the upgrade will be forced. During the upgrade, you cannot use your desktop or laptop for about an hour. So keep this in mind in your schedule. The manual (NL) shows you how to start the upgrade at a time when the notification has disappeared. This allows you to schedule the time of the upgrade yourself. Save all your files before starting the upgrade. This is important because your workstation will automatically reboot during the process. If you are going to upgrade a laptop, also make sure the power adapter is plugged in so that the upgrade is not interrupted.
Objective
Windows 11 will be installed on all Radboud-managed Windows workspaces by October 2025.
Areas of focus
Some devices do not meet the required specifications for Windows 11, so these devices will not receive a notification. If you do not receive a notification, this could be due to a number of reasons.
More information
Devices that do not meet the required specifications must be replaced with new ones. If your device does not comply, you will be informed about this.
Status/results
More than 5,500 devices have now been successfully upgraded or replaced. Some devices have not yet been upgraded or replaced for various reasons. For most of these devices, Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) have been activated since October 2025, so that these devices will continue to receive the necessary Windows 10 security updates for another year. However, there are also devices for which it is not known whether they are still in use. This means that these devices are not secure and pose a potential security risk to Radboud University. Do you have a device that has not yet been replaced or upgraded? Then take action
Furthermore, the necessary adjustments have been made to classrooms and study areas (fewer PCs, more second screen workstations and shared workstations), Wi-Fi has been expanded in various locations, the hardware range has been updated, steps have been taken in the area of security, data has been cleaned up and the necessary adjustments have been made to special workstations (e.g. lab environments).
