Facilities for hybrid and online education

The Radboud University campus has facilities to enable online and hybrid education. The Radboud University campus has facilities to enable online and hybrid education. These facilities are only available in rooms managed by Campus&Facilities.

What is online education?

This concerns education (meetings) in which all students participate online. This can be synchronous (live, at a scheduled time) and asynchronous education (only to watch back later).

Forms of online education

  1. Live streaming a lecture or educational gathering, so that students can watch immediately.
  2. Record web lectures, so that students can (re)watch the lecture afterwards. Note: Read more about web lectures and rooms with a web lecture set.
  3. Record short clips, so students can play the clip as many times as they want.
  4. Record knowledge clips, so students can play the clip as many times as they want. The Radboud Educational Clips team provides extensive support for the development of knowledge clips.

What is hybrid education?

This means education(al gatherings) where a number of the students participate physically on campus, and a number of students will participate online. Online participation can occur via Virtual Classroom, Teams Meetings or Weblectures. In-class interaction will be possible.

Instruction for the use of hybrid educational rooms

Campus&Facilities has furnished educational rooms to suit hybrid education. This means that students can either attend classes on campus or follow them from home with a video connection.

The rooms are equipped with a computer, LCD screen or beamer, a webcam and a microphone. The rooms also have chairs and tables with suitable distance from one another. The combination with a video conference tool like Teams Meetings or Virtual Classroom makes it possible to have a direct connections with the students who are at home.

The rooms will also have a short manual (in Dutch) that explains how to turn on and use the equipment. There are several manuals available on the use of Teams Meetings and Virtual Classroom. If you have not yet worked with a video conference tool you might want to practice this at home beforehand.

Tips for using hybrid educational rooms

Preparation tips

  • Bring your presentation on a USB stick.
  • Make sure you have your accounts and passwords ready. Apply for a licence for video tools via the ICT Service Centre.
  • Be on time and calculate the time you need to get set up. Remember that there are people waiting not only in the room, but also online.
  • Choose which platform you want to use (Teams Meetings or Virtual Classroom) in advance and use the same platform during all your lectures.
  • Check the audio and video connection in advance.

Technical tips

  • The microphone caps will have finger condoms. These caps need to be cleaned after use. Cleaning supplies can be found on the desk.
  • The beltpack uses AA batteries and lasts about 20 hours. New batteries can be retrieved at the doorman's desk.
  • If there are problems, use the manual in the room, ask a student for help, or contact the Media Technology department for assistance.

Presentation tips

  • Let students know in advance if you are going to record the lecture. Explain why you would like to record the session. Tell students that they have the right to turn off the camera and in that way will not being recorded.
  • Remember that you not only have listeners in the room, but also at home. During the lecture, ask if the pace is still good and if you can be heard clearly.
  • Pause regularly to catch your breath and have a sip of water.
  • Look directly into the camera.
  • Repeat a question after it is asked.
  • Facial expressions and hand gestures make you easier to follow. Use them when you can and enlarge them so that they are visible on the screen.
  • Don't forget to share your screen when presenting a PowerPoint slide show.

Didactic tips

  • Indicate what you expect from students in the room and at home beforehand. Also indicate that you are open to questions.
  • Let students ask their questions via the chat, and regularly check the chat throughout the lecture. One suggestion is to have someone in the room keep track of the chat.
  • You can present statements using Wooclap and/or the poll function.
  • After the lecture, specify where the recording can be found.
