‘Beyond Catholic Life’ a photographic exploration of six special places

Churches, monasteries, and cemeteries typically reveal much about the religious, cultural, and social history of a city. For some, this heritage is still part of daily life; for others, it is no more than a reminder of it. Of what once belonged to the larger Catholic life in Nijmegen, many churches and monasteries have disappeared over the years, having been dismantled out of necessity or having changed function.

The exhibition Het Rooms Leven Voorbij (Beyond Catholic Life) showcases a small part of the (Catholic) religious heritage in Nijmegen through approximately 70 photographs. Central to this are, in order: the Molenstraat Church (Petrus Canisius Church), the Titus Brandsma Memorial Church, the Antonius van Padua Church, the Maria Geboortekerk, and the Daalseweg and Rustoord cemeteries.

In the photo series, particular attention has been paid to the cultural-historical component: the shared experience and diversity; as expressed in architecture, symbolism, and ornamentation, among other things, as well as in providing space for social initiatives.

The photos were taken in the first half of 2026 by photographers from Fotoclub Flash.
