At the Lowlands Science Lab, festival visitors voluntarily take part in experiments to help advance science. Participating researchers can collect a lot of data and make festival visitors and media enthusiastic about their research.
In recent years, many Dutch research universities, universities of applied sciences, hospitals, and other research institutes conducted dozens of studies at Lowlands. The topics of these studies ranged from presence of the ‘adventure gene’ in visitors to sustainable eating behaviour, pain stimuli, and language development. Find out more about the studies conducted in previous years.
Researchers from all research institutions are invited to submit proposals for research studies during the festival. A lot is possible, provided the proposals can guarantee quality of research and feasibility. The data obtained by researchers at the festival may only be used anonymously for scientific research.
Application criteria
- The research study should be socially relevant and of interest to the Lowlands audience.
- Lowlands visitors should be able to take part in the research study, be the subject of the study, or learn something from it. For example, research studies that only use questionnaires are not interesting to visitors.
- The study should take into account the environmental conditions of a festival site, including vibrations, loud sounds, music, and alcohol consumption. For example, research studies that require a soundproof room are not feasible.
- The study should be described in maximum 1,500 words.
- The application should include a floor plan of the required space/physical design, including dimensions.
