Climate in the Maria Montessori Building

Climate has played a role in the experience of the Maria Montessori Building ever since its completion. Due to several choices in the design, it is not possible to control the climate separately for each room. It is possible, however, to check the temperature on a screen in each of the separate rooms.

Campus & Facilities launched an investigation into the current condition of the rooms, following several complaints about high temperatures, stuffiness, and irritated eyes. The Building Energy Management System (GBS) provides an overview of all the temperature, CO2, and relative-humidity values per room. Besides, there were a few test rooms where these values were measured over a longer period of time using loggers. There were also several visual tests in order to create a clear picture of the issues.

This research has shown that the air velocity of the incoming air is too low, due to which the air doesn’t circulate throughout the room properly. Furthermore, the temperature of the incoming air is too high, which means that the air doesn’t properly settle in the room. The relative humidity is alright and within the standard bounds.

We tried out several adjustments in the test rooms in order to see how they would change the experience of these rooms. The following adjustments were made:

  • The ventilation was active for 24 hours a day, as opposed to only being active when the room was occupied;
  • The flow velocity of the incoming air was increased;
  • The temperature of the incoming air was lowered, allowing the air to settle in the room.

These adjustments were implemented in several phases between June and September. Further adjustments were made after the evaluation of the effects. The test-room results show that these adjustments can improve the experience of the indoor climate.

Further research will be done in order to determine what the consequences would be of applying these adjustments to the entire building. Are you currently experiencing climate-related issues? Notify Campus & Facilities via +024 26 3333 or make use of the form.
