The past few months, we have been witnessing a true variety show by cabinet Schoof. The Binnenhof became a circus tent, and many artists dressed as politicians tried to show their skills in the political arena. Acts concerning nitrogen, asylum, student sports, residential construction, to name but a few, were performed with a lot of aplomb. The Dutch audience watched the artists’ performances anxiously. Unfortunately, these acts failed over and over again due to insufficient preparation. It’s clear that ‘practice makes perfect’. Eventually the variety tour of ‘Dick Schoof and friends’ was over within a year.
‘Hans Klok and friends’ are touring the country for at least another 3 months. Perhaps the next cabinet can learn something from them. For instance, no rushed decisions to limit internationalisation or to restrict student sports. Let’s hope that the new cabinet is kinder to science and can tour for a while longer than ‘Dick Schoof and friends’.
