Column Evelyn Kroesbergen: Annual appraisal interviews - a moment of reflection

Some people come in feeling tense, others cross their arms and wait, and even others talk non-stop: the annual appraisal interview. Even though we tell you it’s not all that exciting, that it’s not an assessment and that, if all goes well, you won’t hear anything new; for most people it is at least a little bit of a tense moment. This also applies to the professors I see, and I feel exactly the same when I have my interview with the Executive Board. And yet… my experience tells me that most people appreciate the annual appraisal interview. It is good to take a moment to reflect on what you have achieved and where you are in your development.

You’re also entitled to it. In general, it is nice to hear how others view you, what is appreciated, but also to have the opportunity to look ahead with your supervisor at what you want to and can achieve and to provide each other with feedback. In our faculty, we have not yet managed to hold annual appraisal interviews with everyone. That is the goal, however. So, if you have not yet had your annual appraisal interview or still have to take interviews: schedule them anyway.

The new form that was recently launched also makes it easier. Everything can be done digitally and is securely archived immediately after approval. The form has also been simplified, though I have heard from several people that it does make you think. But I think that is a good thing. A moment of reflection at the end of the year can’t hurt.

When I reflect on the past year, I see a year in which we worked incredibly hard and achieved a great many things in regard to research, education, impact and management. A year in which we worked together to cope with budget cuts and workload, including the relocation. Looking back on this, I feel enormously grateful that we have so many wonderful people working at our faculty who did this together, supported each other, contributed ideas for creative solutions, and who form a wonderful faculty together! I wish everyone a well-deserved holiday!
