Exploring Alternatives to Qualtrics

At the Faculty of Social Sciences, we have been using Qualtrics for surveys and questionnaires in both education and research for many years. Since the COVID pandemic, its use has increased significantly. Qualtrics offers many advantages, but there are also drawbacks. For example, costs have risen sharply in recent years, prompting some researchers to switch to alternatives such as LimeSurvey.

Why this exploration?

Due to rising costs and the need for more efficient solutions, we will work with education and research to explore how we can reduce the use of Qualtrics in the coming year. In addition, in 2026 we will start an assessment of affordable survey software that:

  • offers similar functionalities,
  • meets high data protection standards,
  • and provides strong user support while considering workload.

What does the process look like?

  • 2026: Qualtrics will remain available and can be used where necessary throughout 2026.
  • Exploration: We will investigate alternatives and assess whether a (partial) transition is possible from 2027. For education, this  may be possible from the start of he academic year 2026–2027.
  • We will take into account ongoing survey research currently using Qualtrics as much as possible.

What does this mean for you?

If the faculty decides to switch, all stakeholders will be informed in good time. Based on current experiences, LimeSurvey appears to be a promising option.
