Why this barometer?
The Recognition & Rewards Culture Barometer is being conducted twice during the period 2022–2026 to assess how new approaches to recognising and rewarding academic work are developing within universities. The first measurement took place in January 2024; this is the second and final measurement. The research is carried out by the independent agency Berenschot, commissioned by the national Recognition & Rewards programme. The collected data will remain with Berenschot and will only be shared in aggregated form with institutions and the Recognition & Rewards programme team.
The Recognition & Rewards programme
In 2019, Dutch knowledge institutions and science funders launched the Recognition & Rewards programme. Radboud University has also committed to this programme. Together, we aim to broaden the recognition and rewards of academic work by paying greater attention to the various core domains (research, education, impact, leadership, and patient care) in which academics are active. We are working towards a new balance in recognising and rewarding academics, ensuring that every talent counts. In this way, the Recognition & Rewards programme, together with various other initiatives, contributes to creating a healthy and inspiring working environment in academia.
Since then, the Recognition & Rewards programme team at Radboud University has also been working towards achieving the desired cultural shift. Several initiatives are in place that contribute to establishing a new balance in recognition and rewards. These include the development of a profile guide for academic staff, the promotion of structured reflection and development dialogues, and the systematic integration of Recognition and Rewards–related themes into annual performance reviews. Furthermore, Radboud University collaborates with the Open Science programme, aiming to strengthen the alignment between Open Science and Recognition and Rewards, and enhance the recognition and valuation of Open Science practices.
