Holiday time! – Don't forget your digital security

The summer holidays are approaching! To truly relax, it is advisable to leave your work laptop and phone at home. This is not only beneficial for your peace of mind, but also for your digital security. Public Wi-Fi networks are often available while on holiday, and your data can easily be intercepted. If a device becomes infected and you reconnect it to the company network, this could pose a risk to the entire organisation.

Can't leave your work stuff at home? Make sure you use it safely and don't give cybercriminals a chance to snoop around on your devices. With simple measures and conscious behaviour, you can reduce the risk of cyber incidents. Just as you prepare for a holiday, you can also prepare for digital dangers.

Before the holiday

  • Think carefully about whether you really need to take a work device with you on holiday;
  • Consider whether there are any risks to knowledge security in the country you are travelling to. If you have any doubts about the risks in the country you are travelling to, contact the Knowledge Security Advisory Team;
  • Empty your work laptop/phone as much as possible. Leave as little sensitive data as possible on your devices;
  • Make sure you have a secure password and multi-factor authentication on all your devices;
  • Make sure you have installed all important software updates before you leave.

On holiday

  • Turn on your VPN connection;
  • Do NOT use public Wi-Fi, but a 4G connection, which is much more secure;
  • Make sure no one is looking over your shoulder;
  • Lock your devices when you step away;
  • Do not log in to public computers;
  • Do not do anything confidential on an unknown computer;
  • Keep your equipment safe (in a safe);
  • Install software updates during your holiday.
