How to cope with loss in the workplace

Change is a constant at the university. Teams change, roles shift, and new decisions bring with them different ways of working.

Sometimes these changes are energising. However, they can also – and sometimes even simultaneously – evoke feelings of loss, such as the disappearance of a familiar working environment, a role in which you felt at home, or collaboration with colleagues. It is normal and human to experience grief-like reactions in such situations. Talking about these feelings can help

New tool

To support you with this, a new tool has been developed:

These tools help to recognise grief reactions, make them a topic for discussion, and offer guidance on providing appropriate support. They are based on scientific research and have been specially developed for the university context. Using these guides offers:

  • Insight into grief reactions that may arise following changes or loss in the workplace;
  • Practical guidance on how to discuss these issues;
  • The opportunity to assess your situation using short questionnaires (5–10 minutes);
  • A clear traffic-light model (green, amber, red) as the outcome;
  • Advice and support when needed, for example via a line manager, coach, campus psychologist or occupational social worker.

Use the card(s) for yourself, your staff member(s) or draw others’ attention to them.
