IMM Best Thesis Award 2025 for Stach Kuijpers

The Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM) proudly announces that Dr. Stach Kuijpers has been awarded the IMM Best Thesis Award 2025. Each year, IMM honors up to three PhD candidates whose doctoral research demonstrates exceptional scientific quality and impact. According to the jury, Kuijpers’ thesis clearly distinguished itself through its outstanding depth, originality, and execution.

Groundbreaking Research in Cold Molecular Collisions
Stach Kuijpers completed his PhD within the Spectroscopy of Cold Molecules (SCM) research group at IMM. Under the supervision of Prof. Bas van de Meerakker, he defended his thesis titled “Low Energy Scattering Resonances and Dipole–Dipole Collisions with ND₃”

In his work, Kuijpers developed pioneering experimental methods that opened the door to entirely new insights into low‑energy molecular collisions - an area of fundamental importance in molecular physics and quantum chemistry. His innovative techniques set a new international benchmark for precision and have significantly advanced the field.

The jury praised the thesis for its scientific excellence. “Based on the new original methods he has developed, the new scientific insights he has obtained on cold molecular collisions, the collaborations he fostered between IMM departments, and the clarity of presentation of the results, the jury unanimously decided that Stach deserves the 2025 IMM Best Thesis Award”, according to Prof. Misha Katsnelson, chair of the jury.

Award Ceremony
The IMM Best Thesis Award 2025 was officially presented during the IMM New Year’s Reception on Thursday, 15 January 2026 by Prof. Misha Katsnelson. The institute extends its warmest congratulations to Stach Kuijpers on this well‑deserved recognition.
