Chris Berkhout In Memoriam
Chris Berkhout In Memoriam

In memoriam: Chris Berkhout

It is with deep sadness that we must inform you that our colleague Chris Berkhout (Institute for Molecules and Materials) passed away in his sleep on 18. He was 47 years old.

Chris had been affiliated with Radboud University since 2011. It is with deep gratitude and appreciation that we remember his exceptional contributions to the FLARE free-electron laser project and to the experimental research of the departments of Molecular and Laser Physics, Spectroscopy of Solids and Interfaces, and Ultrafast Spectroscopy of Correlated Materials. Other departments also benefited from his knowledge, dedication, and collegiality. He had been involved with the First Aid Committee since 2014.

Among other things, Chris made a significant contribution to the relocation of one of the Stark decelerators from Berlin to Nijmegen, for which he spent a week in Berlin to carefully prepare everything. In addition, his efforts in coordinating and executing the renovation and reconstruction of our laboratories were invaluable. With his technical knowledge and involvement in preparing experiments, he had a lasting impact on the success of research within the departments. His creativity and ingenuity, particularly in moving and installing laser tables, will always remain with us.

We also remember him fondly for his enthusiasm and dedication to mentoring the younger generation. His commitment to training and supporting students has inspired and shaped many.

His positivity and sense of humour brought light to every room. Always smiling, always ready with a joke to lift others’ spirits. We will never forget his passion for sports and his warm personality. Precisely because he was so full of life, his unexpected passing feels all the more surreal.

We are grateful to Chris for everything he has meant to us. His legacy will live on in the work and the people he touched.

We will miss him dearly and wish his family, friends, and (former) colleagues much strength.
