New academic year, new vending machines on campus

From the start of the new academic year, there will be new vending machines in all buildings offering a range of new coffee, hot and soft drinks, and snacks. The new machines are equipped with card readers, and you can still get free coffee, cocoa or hot water with your employee card. This change is the result of a recent tender process, in which Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE) was selected as the new supplier.

What to expect

The new hot drink vending machines offer a variety of coffees, hot chocolates and hot water for tea. Different types of vending machine are tailored to the location and the crowds on site. This ensures that coffee is readily available and accessible to everyone, - students, staff and visitors.

The arrival of the new vending machines also changes the way drinks are dispensed. They only accept payment via an employee card (with U or E number) or debit card. Employees still get their coffee for free, but only if they use their employee card. Students and visitors pay a small amount per purchase using a debit card. The new vending machines do not provide cups, so remember to bring your own mug or Billie Cup.

Sustainable vending machines on campus

JDE provides services on campus together with CSU and Vending@Work. JDE supplies 'fair trade' coffee, and the new machines are energy-efficient and recyclable. The total number of coffee machines on campus will be slightly lower in September than before. Machines that were rarely used will not be replaced. The new machines are now located in central, easily accessible places. This ensures that coffee is always nearby and accessible to everyone.

What do you think of the coffee?

The current blend was chosen partly on the basis of a taste test conducted with students and staff in early July. Even after the placement has been made, we will actively ask you for feedback on your satisfaction with the flavour and range. This will be done via short surveys, new taste tests, and a recurring feedback question on the vending machines. Tastes change, and if necessary, the range of coffees offered will change accordingly.

When?

The new machines will be placed starting on 11 August in the Huygens building, with the last machine expected to be installed on 29 August at Goods Reception/GWT. Depending on how many machines need to be installed, it will take one or two days per building to plug in the new machines and remove the old ones. The schedule below shows when it is your building's turn.

The pass readers will be installed on the vending machines after they are installed and will only work once all the employee passes are in the system. This is expected to be arranged by 29 August.

  • 11-13 August: Huygens building, Linnaeus building
  • 14-15 August: Elinor Ostrom building, Gymnasion
  • 18-19 August: Elinor Ostrom building, Mercator I en III, UBC
  • 20-21 August: Transitorium, FELIX, HFML, Logistics Centre, Experimental garden, Trigon, Forum, Lecture hall complex (CC)
  • 22 August: Thomas van Aquinostraat 1, Maria Montessori building
  • 25 August: Grotius building, Paviljoen, University Chaplaincy
  • 26-27 August: Erasmus building
  • 28 August: Berchmanianum
  • 29 August: University Library, Delivery point/GWT, Comenius building B

During this period, there may be a temporary unavailability of vending machines at your usual location, and you may experience some inconvenience while the work is being carried out. However, coffee will always be nearby!
