Radboud researchers discuss future of open access publishing

On 25 September approximately 15 researchers from Radboud University and Radboudumc came together to discuss the future of academic publishing. Led by Open Science Officer Dirk van Gorp, groups discussed two important dilemmas: the relationship with commercial publishers and the choice between different open access publication models. Researchers who wish to contribute and participate in future meetings can get in touch.

Preference for alternative publication models

During the discussion, it became clear that the majority of participants see little benefit in continuing the current publication policy, where large commercial publishers profit from substantial investments at the expense of autonomy and transparency. Instead, the researchers present favor Diamond publishing and community-led initiatives, to which they would like to allocate part of the publication budget. Attendees shared their experiences with successful open access publication through alternative models.

Challenges and next steps

Participants acknowledged the challenges of a transition, especially for early-career researchers who depend on publications in renowned journals for their careers. At the same time, they showed willingness to invest time and energy in promoting alternative publication methods and open access options, and in convincing colleagues.

The meeting was a first step in a broader conversation about a national open access strategy. A follow-up meeting is planned at Radboudumc and possibly later at other locations within the university. Researchers interested in contributing to the open access strategy can contact Dirk van Gorp.
