Starting 16 December, fixed Windows workstations will also automatically restart after updates

Starting 16 December, fixed Windows desktops on campus will automatically restart after the monthly Windows updates. This procedure has been in place since April of this year for Windows laptops managed by Radboud University and is now being extended to desktops.

Radboud University installs security updates on managed Windows workstations every third Tuesday of the month. These updates help keep your workstation better protected against security risks and therefore more secure. To fully apply the updates, a restart is required. Until now, you had to manually restart desktops yourself or wait for the weekly automatic restart. That is now changing.

Automatic restart

After the monthly update, you will receive a notification that your workstation will automatically restart within 24 hours.

  • Within those 24 hours, you can choose to restart at a convenient time.
  • If you do not do so, the desktop will be restarted by force after 24 hours.
  • The first automatic restart for desktops will take place after the updates on 16 December.

Make sure to save your documents before restarting your desktop to avoid losing data or other information. Additionally, it is recommended to close apps before restarting your desktop.

Please note: This change only applies to Windows desktops managed by Radboud University. For managed Windows laptops, this change was already implemented in April 2025.
