Stay up to date

Did you know that you can set your mobile phone to install security updates automatically? These updates are important because they help protect your phone.

By setting up automatic updates just once, you’ll always have the latest security software on your mobile. This reduces the risk of criminals gaining access to your device. Whether it’s your personal information or university data, it’s always important to protect it.

How?

As settings vary from device to device, we recommend checking online to see how to set up automatic updates for your device. If this doesn’t work, please check for updates at least once a month.

Why?

Security updates are released regularly for both iOS and Android. For example, the latest iOS update (for Apple) addresses a vulnerability known as ‘Darksword’*. Android devices also receive monthly security updates that fix vulnerabilities.

By installing updates promptly, you reduce the risk of, for example, a data breach, malware and, in the case of Darksword, the possibility of someone taking control of your phone, including your crypto wallet. Regular updates therefore help to protect your data and that of the university. In addition, it is important that you always remain alert to phishing, CEO fraud and other forms of digital scams. Technology provides security; you make it safe.

What more can you do?

  • Use a strong password in combination with MFA.
  • Never share your password with others (and use strong passwords).
  • Use a VPN on public Wi-Fi. (EduVPN is free via the university).
  • Install antivirus software on your device. (F-Secure from Surf is free via the university and also works on your mobile phone).
  • Make sure your laptop, iPad or other device is also equipped with the latest security software. On Radboud-managed devices, you receive these updates automatically.

* Darksword is a hacking tool that exploits compromised websites and can infect older iPhones, allowing attackers to gain access to (sensitive) information, passwords, messages and cryptocurrency.
