SURFdrive switching to Nextcloud: application unavailable throughout the weekend from Friday evening 31 October

On Friday evening, 31 October, the migration of SURFdrive — the personal cloud storage service for Dutch education and research — will begin. During this migration, the SURFdrive storage environment will move from ownCloud to Nextcloud. This means that after the migration, the old SURFdrive Desktop Client, which synchronises files between your local computer and the SURFdrive cloud, will no longer work. From that moment on, you will need to use the Nextcloud Desktop Client instead.

What does this mean for you?

SURFdrive will be unavailable from Friday evening, 31 October, 18:00 until Monday, 3 November. Make sure to save any important files elsewhere in advance, for example on OneDrive.

  • Your files will remain safe and in the same location after the migration.
  • If you are using the SURFdrive Desktop Client, please check by 30 October at the latest that everything is fully synchronised (indicated by a green tick next to the orange SURFdrive icon).
  • After the migration, you must uninstall the old Desktop Client and install the new Nextcloud Desktop Client. This also applies to users with a Radboud managed workstation.

What to do after the migration?

Personal workstation

SURF has prepared a detailed user guide describing all the steps required to install the new Nextcloud Desktop Client and restore your connection.

Radboud managed workstation

Please note: even if you have a Radboud managed workstation, you still need to complete these steps. For uninstalling the SURFdrive Desktop Client (step 4.2) and installing the Nextcloud Desktop Client (step 5), please refer to the guide. Nextcloud Desktop Client will be available in the Software Center from Monday, 3 November.
