One mouse click, 15,000 hours of work and many bitcoins in ransom. It seems like a good thriller and yet it is reality. What happened behind the scenes at Maastricht University between 24 December 2019 and 2 January 2020?
The Digital License 2.0 Phishing & Ransomware tells you all about this true story. The 'Hack of Maastricht' was a wake-up call for all universities and colleges. Everyone became even more aware of the value of the data and the relevance of dealing carefully with data and privacy.
Besides all the technical measures taken by the university, it is very important that you know how to recognise unsafe situations. The module takes you step by step through the hack and gives you tips on how to avoid such a situation. In the quiz, you can test whether you recognise the dangers surrounding e-mail yourself.
If you yourself have doubts about a message or have accidentally clicked on something 'wrong'. Do not hesitate to report this to the ICT Helpdesk. This could save us 15,000 hours of work!
The module was created by SURF in collaboration with Maastricht University and other parties.
