Using a work phone while travelling? Be careful of unexpected costs

If you use the internet abroad via your work phone or internet subscription, you could unexpectedly face high costs. When you are travelling outside Europe and take your work phone with you, turn off your data roaming or prevent your phone will automatically connect to the internet.

If you are staying somewhere outside Europe, it is best to turn off data roaming and buy a local SIM card. This will prevent your subscription from being blocked and Radboud University from being billed for your data usage. This only affects your business subscription.

How do you turn the automatic connection off?

iPhone

  • Go to your settings.
  • Click on 'mobile network'.
  • Click on 'network selection'.
  • Turn off automatically connecting to a network.
  • Then choose the network of the country of your stay.

Android-telefoons

  • Go to your settings.
  • Click on 'connections'.
  • Click on 'mobile networks'.
  • Click on 'network operators'.
  • Turn off automatically connecting to a network.
  • Then choose the network of the country of your stay.

If you stay in another European country (zone 1), you don't need to change anything.
