Working on test quality with digital testing

For almost a year now, lecturers at Radboud University have been working with the Ans testing software. The experiences are mostly positive, and more and more lecturers are taking advantage of the opportunities the software offers in terms of test quality and analysis. Lecturers Ruud van den Beuken (Arts) and Masja van Meeteren (Law) demonstrate how they are working together in the new software to assess students in their courses.

Digital testing has become the norm. When it was introduced in 2018, only 5 to 15% of tests were administered digitally, but by 2025 this had risen to 80% of written tests. At the Faculty of Law, for example, all written tests are now digital.

Testing software contributes to transparency and reliability in testing

Digital testing not only makes it easier to take and mark tests, but testing software also provides valuable information for designing tests and analysing test results. 'These two functions are not yet widely used, which is a missed opportunity. Analysing how test questions are constructed and improving questions are crucial for test quality,“ says Inge Kiezebrink, faculty coordinator for digital testing at the Faculty of Arts. 'In addition, the testing software supports lecturers in providing feedback on students answers, and assessment criteria give students insight into how an assessment was arrived at. This contributes to the transparency and reliability of assessment.'

Examples from educational practice

Masja van Meeteren and Ruud van den Beuken are early adopters of Ans assessment software. In their videos, they explain how they use digital assessment in their course and how the software helps them focus on assessment quality.

Masja van Meeteren on collaboration in test construction and assessment

Masja van Meeteren is professor of Criminology at the Faculty of Law. In this video, she explains how she collaborates with colleagues in test construction and assessment. In her course, this contributes to the quality of test questions and a more reliable assessment of tests.

Ruud van den Beuken on marking with assessment criteria

Ruud van den Beuken is a Assistant Professor in English Language and Culture at the Faculty of Arts. In this video, he explains how marking with assessment criteria in the Ans assessment software helps him to assess better and more transparently.
